I have been collecting Mastertronic games for the ZX Spectrum for a few years now. I know it's easy to play the old games for free in various ways but for me, nothing beats having the old cassette tapes with their fantastic artwork. Mark Bradbury and John Smyth did fantastic work creating such imaginative covers for Mastertronic. Back in the day pocket money didn't go too far in terms of buying games but Mastertronic made it more possible by selling games for £1.99 (£2.99 for their MAD additions). Not all of the games were great and there were certainly a few that were pretty awful but there were also some classic games! Here, I take a look at 10 games from my collection that I consider my favourites. When I was in my mid teens in the 1980s nothing pleased me more than checking out the Mastertronic titles in shops like WH Smiths and John Menzies. Even local newsagents had them! I remember when I was paid for my paper round on a Friday I would instantly buy a Mastertronic game or 3 on from the same shop! Such great times...
