Why did the PlayStation TV fail?

The #PlayStationTV is an awkward micro console that came out at an awkward time. Viewed as a companion to the #PlayStationVita, it's possible to see why a PlayStation-branded set top box would make sense. After all, plenty of folks these days probably wouldn't mind a sleek box for streaming and lite gaming. So, why did it fail?
