Lebron LeBron James and Sony announced a partnership Wednesday which will feature the company releasing limited-edition PlayStation 5 consoles designed by the Los Angeles Lakers star. "It's still crazy to think a kid from Akron who grew up playing games is getting to create something like this," James said in a statement. "Designing a console cover and controller with PlayStation that gives a nod to my I Promise students and where we come from is a pretty cool thing. I hope it's something that continues to inspire everyone who touches it, and that they have a little fun finding meaning in every detail." Both the console and the controller will feature the phrase "Nothing Is Given. Everything Is Earned," along with crowns designed to honor LeBron's King James moniker. The controller will also feature the phrases "Chosen Ones," Build Uplift Empower," and "I Promise," with the latter being a nod to James' I Promise School in Akron, Ohio. "From his record-breaking achievements in basketball to his extraordinary efforts to lift his community, LeBron is an inspiration to many of us at PlayStation," the statement released by PlayStation said. "We couldn't have asked for a more ideal partner to be the first-ever collaborator to design limited-edition PlayStation products. It was great to see LeBron's vision for the design come to life and showcase his passions for gaming and community. We hope PlayStation fans will love this design as much as we enjoyed helping create it."
PS3 Update:
Sony has released a PS3 firmware update, version 4.90. There's nothing fancy in the update--it improves system performance and requires a minimum 200 MB of free space on the PS3 hard drive or storage media. It's impressive to see PS3 updates still rolling out, especially since we're on the fifth generation of PlayStation and there are no more new games being made for the PS3. Sony did plan to shut down the PS3 storefront in 2021, but reversed its plans after players who still use the PlayStation 3 pushed back against the decision. It is, however, harder to purchase PS3 and Vita content now. Credit and debit cards, as well as Paypal, can't be used to purchase content in PlayStation Store on PS3 or Vita devices. Players need to add funds through other ways like using the desktop or mobile versions of the PlayStation Store, or other PlayStation devices like the PS5. Sony did proceed with plans to close down the PSP store in 2021. In related hardware news, Sony's PSVR 2 launched on Feburary 22. The virtual reality headset is a more refined and advanced iteration of the first PSVR.
PS5 TV Despite being responsible for the massively popular PlayStation 5 console, Sony has lagged behind rival brands when it comes to supporting video game features on its TVs. There have been one or two small moves, such as the introduction of a Perfect for PlayStation 5 campaign that introduced a couple of exclusive PS5/Sony TV interactions, but there’s no doubt that the likes of Samsung, TCL and, especially, LG have shown much more gaming awareness with their TVs so far.
