Dead Space is a survival horror game set in 2508, after Earth has suffered an extinction-level event caused by overuse of resources. The remaining humans turn to the Concordance Extraction Corporation, who designs the USG Ishimura, a ship for the new practice of "planetcracking" to mine other planets for resources. The Ishimura is in the middle of its 35th planetcrack when it is infested by an alien species known as Necromorphs. Players take on the role of Isaac, an engineer, and must fight their way through the ship using improvised weapons and navigating weightless and decompressed environments. The game features an 'over the shoulder' third-person perspective and emphasizes dismemberment as a means of defeating enemies. It also features a unique interface, relaying information to the player through lights and translucent screens.
