Speculation about a Nintendo Switch successor has been gathering momentum in recent weeks and months, especially with the Switch itself approaching its sixth anniversary, but it might be a while yet before Nintendo is ready to release its next console.

That’s as per industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis, who recently told GamesIndustry that he doesn’t expect the next Nintendo console to launch this year. As per Harding-Rolls projections, the Switch successor will release sometime in 2024, while this year, he expects Nintendo to move plenty of Switch units, thanks in large part to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.“I’m not expecting a next-gen Nintendo console in 2023: we have 2024 in our forecasts,” the analyst said.Reports and leaks have suggested on more than one occasion that work on a Switch successor is ramping up behind the scenes at Nintendo.

Recently, journalists also claimed that the aforementioned Zelda title is also likely to be the last major Nintendo game to release for the Switch– though one would imagine that relatively smaller-scale releases – like Pikmin 4, which is also due out this year – will still be in the pipeline.
