Pokémon Legends: Arceus (January 28 - Switch) With Pokemon Legends: Arceus, The Pokemon Company is finally giving fans of the series what they’ve long been asking for. Well, sort of. While definitely more open that previous games in the series, Arceus isn’t quite a true open world experience like say Breath of the Wild. That’s because, as the developers have confirmed, the region you’ll explore will be segmented into separate areas. Nonetheless, expect a more freeform style of exploration with many of the trappings - pardon the pun - you’d expect. To complete your pokedex, you’ll have to do research on pokemon, then seek them out and do battle. And speaking of, the combat has changed. Your pokemon will now have two combat styles to choose from - agile style and strong style - and depending on their stats, some pokemon will now be able to take multiple turns in a row. As for exploration, Arceus features a deer-like pokemon that you can ride on land, a water pokemon that will help brave the high seas, and a flying pokemon that will let you take to the skies. You’ll be able to play PokemoArceus on Switch this January 28th.
Horizon Forbidden West (February 18 - PS5, PS4, PC) PlayStation has been slowly but steadily drip feeding us new information about Horizon Forbidden West every couple of months. Most recently, we got an awesome trailer at the Game Awards, and just before that, we heard that Guerrilla Games has an entire team of developers dedicated just to making the world feel more alive. Previously, we’ve seen gameplay footage that makes it clear, exploration in Alloy’s latest adventure will be much more fluid and flexible than in Zero Dawn. For starters, Alloy can now free climb rocky surfaces and she’ll have a grappling hook called the Pullcaster, which she’ll use to pull herself toward very liberally placed grapple points throughout the world. You’ll also have the Sheildwing which will let you glide through the air and finally, you’ll have a mouthpiece that will allow you to breathe underwater. Combat is also getting some upgrades. In addition to overhauled skill trees and new weapons, Aloy will have Valor Surges. These are special attacks - there will be 12 in total - that you can charge up by performing skillful maneuvers in combat. Once charged, Valor Surges can be unleashed to deal big damage or maybe unleash some special ability. As you probably know, you’ll also face new robo-creatures too. Most recently we got a glimpse of this giant snake. Pretty cool. Forbidden West is set to release on February 18th.
Elden Ring (February 25 PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC) Some people might call Elden Ring open-world Dark Souls, but as someone who’s played both, I can say Elden Ring is way more than that. First off, this is a propper open world. Way more open than even the world of the OG Dark Souls. You’ll be able to pick what to do and where to go, and it’s going to feature a lot more optional content including bosses, minibosses, and explorable areas. Plus, you’ll have a horse which will help you get around effortlessly, but you’ll even be able to fight while on horseback. There’s also a crouch button, stealth tactics, a jump button, and you can equip powerful skills to different weapons. You can even summon spirits in Elden Ring, which are AI controlled allies that will fight alongside you. Yeah. This isn’t Dark Souls. However, there are similarities, combat is as unforgiving as ever, and when it comes to the game’s proper dungeons, I fully expect to see the same outstanding level design. Overall, I’m confident this will be another banger of a game by From Software when it releases on February 25th for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
